RXCSF Youth Skiing Festival
Written by Bill Broderick
On January 30th and 31st, 57 skiers, including 42 from GVBKYS/RXCSF Youth Skiing and 15 out-of-towners, enjoyed a fabulous Festival at Bristol Summit XC Center. Congratulations to all of the skiers who extolled the Olympic virtues of Excellence, Respect and Friendship. There were many exciting skate and classic races at every level each morning. Saturday afternoon’s competition emphasized teamwork and camaraderie, with skiers divided into five teams named after each color of the Olympic rings. Red, Yellow, Blue, Black and Green teams competed against one another and treasure hunted for Olympic flags and participated in contests to see who could catch big air on the jump, creatively ski/slide under the limbo pole and not drop the egg on the spoon in the relay. Making jump turns at 90/180/270/360 degree angles, one-legged gliding and a slalom relay rounded out Saturday’s events. The weekend’s events culminated in an open fun relay where parents and coaches enjoyed racing with and against some of the finest young skiers this side of Vancouver!
Saturday night’s Festival banquet at Steamboat Landing in Canandaigua was attended by 109 skiers and parents who enjoyed a pasta dinner, a beautiful slide show of the day’s events, door prizes for all skiers, an awards ceremony which included ribbons for all participants and a commemorative 2010 Olympic cross-country ski pin, and the hit game “Are You Smarter Than a Bill Kocher?” A huge thank you goes out to all of the many parents and volunteers who worked tirelessly both behind the scene and on the scene to produce a wonderful weekend that the youth skiers will always treasure. With all of the fun we had this weekend, who even remembers that we drove up South Hill Road to the summit early Saturday morning in sub-zero tempeartures?!?!
