City of Rochester Youth Program

One goal of the RXCSF strategic plan is to expand our outreach of cross country skiing to City of Rochester youth. In February of 2024 we ran an initial pilot program with the City of Rochester Recreation Center on Carter Street. The program targets 6 to 12 year old students. We were assisted by the staff at the Carter Street R Center. The plan was to conduct ski lessons one afternoon for four consecutive weeks. RXCSF supplied the equipment including boots and skis. We has a good turn out of ten enthusiastic kids. Unfortunately, the lack of snow limited on-snow time. We ended up conducting the first lesson on grass. The kids learned how to put on their boots and step into bindings, practiced moving on skis (classical, no poles), and how to recover after a fall. As they became more accustomed to moving on skis we had them do several fun activities. Unfortunately, the next two weeks also lacked snow. However, a field trip to Bristol Mountain was arranged for the last week of the program, sponsored by RXCSF, to give them some on snow experience. The kids had a blast. Even the drive down was memorable as they spotted a deer. Following 45 minutes or so of skiing, we all shared subs in the summit lodge. Planning is underway to conduct another session in January/February this ski season building on last year’s experience. Anna Gorbold and Bob Kuehl will be leading the program this season. We can always use volunteer help if anyone is interested in participating. It was definitely a fun experience.
